‘March For Israel’ and ‘Here To Work’ Protests: Officials in Washington, DC, are preparing for a substantial turnout on Tuesday as two significant demonstrations are set to take place in the nation’s capital. The National Guard will be collaborating with local police to ensure security during the events.
The first demonstration, titled the “March For Israel,” is organized by the Jewish Federations of North America. It is scheduled to start shortly before noon and is anticipated to draw up to 60,000 participants to the National Mall. The purpose of the rally is to express solidarity and support for Israel and its people amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict sparked by Hamas’ Oct. 7 terror attack.
Contrary to its name, the “March For Israel” event will not involve an actual march and will be confined to the National Mall, where significant fencing has been installed as a security measure. Lawmakers are expected to address the crowd during the rally.
Simultaneously, the “Here To Work” protest, advocating for immigration reform, will take place on Tuesday. Organizers are predicting the participation of thousands of individuals calling for work permits to be granted to undocumented immigrants who have been part of communities, raised families, and contributed through work and taxes for extended periods.
As outlined in the permit application for the “Here To Work” protest, an estimated 5,000 individuals are projected to participate in a march from the U.S. Capitol to Lafayette Park, located outside the White House. The demonstration is scheduled to extend over several hours, during which participants will advocate for increased government initiatives to bring relief to immigrants.
Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser announced on Monday that the police had requested assistance from the National Guard, especially considering planned road closures. The National Guard will be supporting traffic safety points as the city prepares for what is anticipated to be a large gathering.
The Department of Homeland Security has classified Tuesday’s rally as a “Level 1” security event, signifying the highest level of risk assessment. Although there are no specific, actionable threats identified in the assessment, it aligns with previous warnings from federal authorities. To provide context, the DHS designates events like the Super Bowl as Level 1, indicating significant national and international importance that may require extensive federal security preparations.
Paris Lewbel, spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police Department, underscored the dedication to safeguarding the well-being and security of both residents and visitors throughout the demonstrations. Despite the “Level 1” designation, there are currently no credible threats reported.
