A devastating incident unfolded at Niagara Falls as a luxury car, a 2022 Bentley Flying Spur, crashed into a border checkpoint, leading to a fiery explosion. The couple in the vehicle, identified as Kurt P. Villani and Monica Villani, both 53, from Grand Island, lost their lives in the tragic accident.
The Villani family is known for owning Gui’s Lumber and multiple Ace Hardware stores across western New York, a business that has been in operation since the mid-1980s.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing, with authorities exploring potential factors such as medical issues or mechanical failures that might have contributed to the vehicle careening through an intersection, hitting a low median, and becoming airborne before colliding with security booths at the Rainbow Bridge.
The families and the lumber company, through a joint statement issued by the Erie County Sheriff’s Office, conveyed their appreciation for the overwhelming support received. They kindly asked for privacy during this challenging period as they work through their grief and start the process of recovery.
The incident caused concern on both sides of the border, prompting the closure of the bridge and nearby crossings. Initial worries about a possible terror attack were dispelled after an investigation by the FBI’s Buffalo office, confirming it as a traffic-related incident.
The Villanis were well-regarded in their community for their generosity and support. Their charitable endeavors, like donating turkeys for local food drives, highlighted their commitment to giving back to the community.
The passing of Kurt P. Villani, following the death of his father the previous year, has left a significant void in the tightly knit business community.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul described the scene as “surreal” due to the vehicular devastation, emphasizing the severity of the crash and subsequent explosion.
The investigation by the Niagara Falls Police Department is expected to take considerable time due to the complexity of the incident.
The Rainbow Bridge, frequented by approximately 6,000 vehicles daily, offers picturesque views of Niagara Falls and stands as a vital passage between borders.
